Notes
Torfmann had stayed at Husum a couple of nights before. He'd taken a direct route, but I was having fun following the North Sea Cycle Route as near to the coast as I could. I was up by half past six as the sun struck my tent and cooked breakfast again on my petrol stove. All my washing was dry but the tent was wet with dew and condensation and took until nine o'clock until it was reasonably dry.
I rode along the coast path into Büsum and ended up in the docks, which was not what I had intended but was interesting. Back on the cycle path I found a bakerei but they only had white bread but I bought some rolls anyway. Ahead of me on the coastal path there was another break in the path where the Eider comes down to the sea. The map showed that there was a way across, and I hoped for better luck than yesterday. All was good though as there was a pedestrian lift bridge that was operating at half hour intervals.
After that I left the coast to cut straight across a peninsular via Garding, where I stopped for lunch at a restaurant in the town square. There was a morning market just beginning to pack up as I arrived, and I sat under a large sun-shade eating a large mixed grill – not a green vegetable in sight.
I came to the coast path again and a rather posh fish restaurant where I had an ice cream with hot cherries in a glaze sauce and an iced coffee. At Husum I chatted to a chap on a Moulton cycling with his young son. He told me that he had ridden 10,000 miles on it during the year before he got married. I was so engrossed I missed my turn and had to double back to cross the isthmus onto Nordstrand.
The camp site was quite full, but I squeezed into a space between two other tents and tried to keep a low profile. there was quite a good camp restaurant where I had supper and large beer before taking a stroll along the sea dyke and turning in.
