Notes

I set off after a small breakfast of coffee and croissant along hilly roads towards my next campsite only 16 miles away, considering the option of making up for the short day by pushing on to Civitella del Lago that would make a 55 mile day. I really should have pushed on but in the end gave up and stopped when I got to Otricoli.

The road was badly maintained having splits in the surface that were no problem for cars but which were as wide as tram tracks and had to crossed with care. In France such cracks are filled with tarmac but in Italy they are just left. Road signage was difficult to follow with place names not matching my maps so junctions saw me stopping and pondering the look of the terrain and working out how it matched up with the map.

I switched my GPS device as I crossed the Tiber, which had done a huge loop to the east and was now heading north west, so that I could find the campsite. As it was the route led me up dirt track that looked unpromising but up and over a small hill I came to the site, surrounded by chain link fencing. I found a way in and booked in for the night. It was only about eleven o’clock and the sun was hot. The proprieter showed me a shady spot but it had no grass and was near a tip at the edge of the site, so I opted for a row of small trees planted a year or so ago that in due course would be much bigger, but for now threw only narrow strips of shade. I pitched so the shade would come round in the afternoon and went off to shower and do my washing. It had all dried by three o’clock.

I had lunch in the restaurant and went back in the evening for another meal. The proprietor was very chatty, telling me about setting up the site a couple of years ago and putting in a good family pool that clearly was bringing in day-customers.
