Researching and creating a family tree – golly, what bag of worms!
I had used mind mapping software to draw a picture of family members, which has grown to a size that I cannot print on a single piece of paper. The catalyst to start a more formal investigation of my wider genealogy was the hand-drawn family tree of a grand uncle that was passed to me a few weeks ago.
You might like to try FreeMind, an excellent free mind mapping application that I have become quite attached to. The image on the right is a depiction of the map of my family tree that allows me to see at a glance the complexity of it all. Just click on the image that will open in a new window and you can enlarge it to read and scroll round.
I tried a number of free applications but eventually settled on Gramps, at least to start with. Click on the menu item above for an overview of where I've got to so far.
