Using Linux Mint I removed Windows10 from my laptop computer because Microsoft intended to cease supporting it in October. Instead I installed Linux Fedora but found that there was a bug that prevented it from installing updates. The answers I got from Fedora's user forum didn't help me so instead I installed Linux Mint. Fedora is a branch from Red Hat, and Mint is a branch from Ubuntu. I found Mint easier to set up as just about everything can be managed from the graphical interface without me having to resort to the command line. Now I have just about everything working even down to installing Xplane11, as well as Apache and PHP so that I can manage my website.

Wordpress Website Today I finished creating a small website using WordPress. It's there to demonstrate that with a bit of ingenuity it's possible to bully the system into submission.

Creating a JOIN SQL I have deleted the first and last name columns from the forum table and inserted a user id column that hopefully will link to the user id column in the users table. This avoids the duplication of name details, instead relying on the unique link between the tables based on the user id number.

Finally! After numerous attempts I altered the post_action file to remove all html elements and left just the php script. Somehow that enabled the load() function to work.

Betty's Central Heating Betty has a new central heating boiler, with a remote thermostat that controls the temperature at different times of the day. There was some confusion amongst her carers about controlling the temperature of the house, where they had not come across these modern central heating systems. They had been altering the temperature of the water in the radiators by adjusting the temperature that the boiler ran at. In so doing the radiators may have become warmer, but without setting the remote thermostat properly the air temperature remained cool. So, we returned the boiler water temperature to its default setting of 65C. In modern systems the remote thermostat not only controls the air temperature but it also allow the air temperature to be set to different temperatures at different times of the day on different days of the week. The daily pattern is split into four periods: morning, day, evening and night. The times of each of these can be set, and in this case I set morning to begin at 6:30am, day to begin at 8:30am, evening to begin at 6:30pm and night to begin at 10:30pm. Typically in a house where no-one is in during the day the temperature will be set to drop to, say, 15C, but for morning and evening to be set to rise to, say, 20C. At night the temperature is often set to drop much further to, say, 10C. In the case of a house which is occupied throughout the day the temperature needs to be maintained at, say, 20C. I set the different periods to their respective temperatures (morning: 20C; day: 20C; evening: 20C; night: 10C) on day one and then copied that programme to each successive day so that every day of the week was exactly the same. Where the occupancy of a house changes on different days of the week then those days can have an individual programmes, but that was not necessary in this case. We will monitor those settings over the next few days and adjust them if necessary.
